Every day, there is at least one pet that gets strayed away from its home or gets brutally hurt and killed. Unlike before, domesticated species like dogs, cats, rabbits or birds, are not treated like “just animals” anymore. Pets are now treated like friends or home buddies. More and more concerned citizens have started campaigning against the inhumane treatment of animals by other heartless individuals or organizations.
A US-based organization called PETA helps create awareness to the public about the intentional and unknowing mistreatment to animals. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals lead by Ingrid Newkirk, campaigns using different forms of media against the cruelties done to animals. The group boycotts many restaurants that serve meat or poultry dishes, due to the confirmed brutal killing of the animals they cook.
PETA imposed sanctions against KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) because, according to the group's website, “suppliers cram birds into waste-filled factories, breed and drug them to grow so large that they can't even walk, and often break their wings and legs.” To add, the suppliers slit the birds' throats while they are still conscious, and then dropped the chicken in hot water. The restaurant, according to the group, has not yet adapted a more civilized way that is why PETA continues to fight against them. Other companies that the group has boycotted are McDonald's, Armani, and Burger King, to name a few.
Members of PETA include a lot of celebrities who continually urge the public to go vegetarian and not to wear fur. The group is known for making posters,
canvas prints, billboards, and videos of celebrities who would “rather go naked than wear fur” or of animals being tortured and killed, as their way of creating social consciousness. Most of these campaign strategies have become controversial.
A person does not have to be a member of a known organization to be able to stop animal cruelty. Avail of flyer, poster or
canvas printing; spread the word of any missing or homeless animal around your neighborhood, and help save animals' lives on dog at a time.
